Meet Master Artisan Matsuda
Master Matsuda is a Kyoto-based urushi artisan with over 50 years of experience in traditional Japanese lacquerware. In this workshop, he guides you through the final steps of kintsugi, sharing the beauty, care, and philosophy behind Japanese craftsmanship.
What You’ll Do in the Workshop
Traditional urushi needs time to cure, so the full repair process cannot be completed in a 120-minute session.
In this hands-on workshop, you will experience the final and most beautiful stages of the process, guided by Master Matsuda.

Welcome & Preparation

Introduction to Kintsugi
Master Matsuda introduces the story, materials, and philosophy of kintsugi, a traditional Japanese art of restoration.

Polishing the Repaired Surface
Using traditional horsetail, gently polish the hardened urushi and whetstone powder mixture along the repaired seams.

Applying Urushi Lacquer
With a fine brush, apply a thin layer of urushi lacquer over the seams in preparation for the gold finish.

Adding Gold Powder
Carefully place gold powder onto the lacquered lines, bringing out the distinctive beauty of kintsugi.

Take Home Your Piece

Yes. This is traditional kintsugi using urushi lacquer. The earlier repair steps are prepared in advance by Master Matsuda, since the full process takes several weeks. In the workshop, you will experience the final finishing process in one session.
You will learn about kintsugi and urushi, prepare the repaired lines, apply lacquer, and add brass or 24k gold powder depending on your chosen plan.
The workshop takes approximately 120 minutes, including an introduction to kintsugi, hands-on finishing work, and time for questions.
